The Shawshank Redemption (Two-Disc Special Edition)

without comments

When this popular prison drama was released in 1994, some critics complained that the movie was too long (142 minutes) to sustain its story. Those complaints miss the point, because the passage of time is crucial to this story about patience, the squeaky wheels of justice, and the growth of a life-long friendship. Only when the film reaches its final, emotionally satisfying scene do you fully understand why writer-director Frank Darabont (adapting a novella by Stephen King) allows the story to unfold at its necessary pace, and the effect is dramatically rewarding. Tim Robbins plays a banker named Andy who’s sent to Shawshank Prison on a murder charge, but as he gets to know a life-term prisoner named Red (Morgan Freeman), we realize there’s reason to believe the banker’s crime was justifiable. We also realize that Andy’s calm, quiet exterior hides a great reserve of patience and fortitude, and Red comes to admire this mild-mannered man who first struck him as weak and unfit for prison life. So it is that The Shawshank Redemption builds considerable impact as a prison drama that defies the conventions of the genre (violence, brutality, riots) to illustrate its theme of faith, friendship, and survival. Nominated for seven Academy Awards including Best Picture, Actor, and Screenplay, it’s a remarkable film that signaled the arrival of a promising new filmmaker–a film that many movie lovers count among their all-time favorites. –Jeff Shannon

Moral Orel, Vol. 1, The Unholy Edition

without comments

In Moral Orel, a 15-minute stop-motion, animated series created by Dino Stamatopoulos, Orel, an 11-year-old boy who loves church, just wants to do God’s work. His unbridled enthusiasm for piousness and his misinterpretations of religious morals, however, often lead to disastrous results – including self-mutilation and crack addiction. But no matter how much trouble he gets into, his reverence and faith keep him cheery to the bitter end. The DVD contains 15 uncensored episodes from the first and second seasons, along with all-new uncensored bonus materials!

DVD Features:
Additional Scenes
Featurette:Behind-the-scenes Featurette
Other:God’s Chef – Director’s Cut Unedited Version Original Opening Credit animation End Credit Animation

What exactly makes this double disc of Moral Orel’s first season just so “unholy”? Well, for starters, it’s uncensored, but that label is really just an amusing ruse, because if anything, the original episodes, which ran as part of Adult Swim’s programming, are more offensive than anything you’re likely to see on network or cable television. The brainchild of TV writer Dino Stamatopolous (Mr. Show, The Ben Stiller Show), the animated series Moral Orel skewers both conservative viewpoints and children’s shows like Davey and Goliath, from which Orel borrows its animated style and nave world view. The series follows the thoroughly misguided adventures of Orel, a very impressionable young resident of the small town of Moralton. The citizens of said burg live by a very strict interpretation of Christian beliefs, and this rigid interpretation tends to land Orel in very hot water when he attempts to apply them to the less-than-black-and-white world around him. Over the course of the first season’s ten episodes (which are all included here, as well as five episodes from the second season), Orel accidentally unleashes a plague of zombies on his townsfolk (“The Lord’s Greatest Gift”), develops a horrific crack addiction (“Charity”), gets pierced in an unmentionable place (“The Blessed Union”), and in the series’ most jaw-dropping episode to date, “God’s Chef,” turns a wrong-headed interpretation of sex into a town-wide rash of unexpected pregnancies.

If you’re no longer shocked by South Park, chances are that Moral Orel will fill that void, but it’s important to note that like South Park, Orel isn’t just about breaking taboos. There’s a lot of very clever dialogue here, and the “lessons” taught to Orel by his dad, Clay, and the miserable Reverend Putty, do much to skewer the double-talk that permeates zealous types on both sides of the religious and social fences. Supplemental features on The Unholy Edition include eight commentaries by Stamatopoulous and his production team (which includes fellow Mr. Show alum Jay Johnston, who also provides many voices for the series), which cover the trials and tribulations involved in the show’s productions, as well as the many headaches incurred by the network over content and thematic issues. Several featurettes are also included, and the most entertaining of these is “The Awkward Comic-Con Panel,” in which a seemingly deranged Stamatopolous gets into an argument with Venture Bros. creators Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer; commentaries by both sides of the fracas are also included. The extras are rounded out by deleted scenes, network bumpers, and footage of Stamatopolous recording the voice of Reverend Putty (he was replaced by William Saylers). –Paul Gaita

A Night At the Roxbury (Special Collector’s Edition)

without comments

Expanding their one-joke skit from television’s Saturday Night Live, Chris Kattan and Will Ferrell are Doug and Steve Butabi, the wearers of the rayon suits and Speedo trunks who bob their heads in unison to dance music while unsuccessfully preying on women in clubs. What’s funny in a three-minute piece doesn’t always get funnier by expansion, but Kattan and Ferrell give it a go with fellow SNL member Molly Shannon as their ambitious neighbor. By day they work in their father’s fake-plant store. By night they prowl the club scene after spraying on the cologne in their gauchely decorated bedroom. A fender-bender with Richard Grieco (playing himself) gets them into the popular club the Roxbury, but it’s not all good news, as the brothers soon find themselves torn apart. Doug and Steve are pathetic but lovable, mostly due to the actors’ talents for self-deprecating humor. All gifted comedians, Kattan, Ferrell, and Shannon obviously feel comfortable around each other, and their love triangle (which prompts send-ups of Say Anything and Jerry Maguire) is the funniest joke in this mostly lame comedy. Too bad, because it clocks in at about 80 minutes and could have run on television as a pretty good episode of SNL, which has been known to get a bit lame itself. –Shannon Gee

Dracula 2000

without comments

The master of modern horror, Wes Craven, presents a riveting adaptation of the chilling classic featuring Jennifer Esposito (SUMMER OF SAM), Omar Epps (IN TOO DEEP), Jonny Lee Miller (TRAINSPOTTING), Vitamin C (GET OVER IT), and Jeri Ryan (STAR TREK: VOYAGER). When a team of techno-savvy thieves breaks into a high-security vault, they don’t discover priceless artwork … they find a crypt that hasn’t been opened for 100 years! Suddenly, the ancient terror of Dracula is unleashed in the chaotic 21st century. Free to follow his pursuits of seduction and power, Dracula’s first destination is America and the exotic city of New Orleans, a place where he feels right at home. Not far behind, however, is a young vampire hunter (Miller) from London, determined to save a young woman (Justine Waddell) with whom Dracula shares his dark legacy!

As a director, Wes Craven has been able to infuse his horror movies with humor and some smart, often genuinely creepy, thrills, even on his lowest-budgeted films. As a producer of horror movies, well, his record has been spotty at best. Craven tapped his longtime editor Patrick Lussier to direct Dracula 2000, and the movie ends up with all the good and bad of “a Wes Craven production.” A modern-day update of the Dracula legend, the script has some genuinely good ideas. Christopher Plummer (The Insider) takes a relatively juicy role as Van Helsing, owner of an antiques shop specializing in ancient weapons. He takes exception to how his namesake was portrayed in Bram Stoker’s classic novel, which he’s more than happy to tell his assistant (Jonny Lee Miller, “Sick Boy” from Trainspotting) without telling him the whole story. When Omar Epps leads a band of high-tech criminals to break into Van Helsing’s high security vault (thinking that with so much security there’s got to be something extremely valuable in there), what they end up stealing is the body of Dracula, who of course awakens from his slumber. When the story shifts to New Orleans, where Van Helsing’s estranged daughter is working for the local Virgin Megastore (here metaphor is replaced by product placement), Dracula is drawn to her. The undead start to multiply, and the vampire hunt resumes. Another excellent idea deals with a new origin to Dracula, flashing back to biblical times to explain his aversion to silver and crosses. But there is a downside. Under the inept direction of Lussier the movie is never scary, inspiring instead an occasional feeling of pity for the actors. Overall, this a vampire movie for the mind, not the heart. –Andy Spletzer

Don’t Try This at Home: A Year in the Life of Dave Navarro

without comments

Former guitarist for Jane’s Addiction and The Red Hot Chili Peppers, superstar, sex symbol, and reality television favourite Dave Navarro shares a year in his life in the Hollywood hills, featuring stories and strips from his infamous photo booth.

When Dave Navarro decided to open the doors of his house in the Hollywood hills to the chaos of the valley below, the only rule was, ‘You come in the house, you get in the photo booth.’ The result is a diary, a sociology experiment, a documentary of Hollywood, and an exercise in exhibitionism. Caught on film are strippers, Kurt Loder, Marilyn Manson, pizza delivery boys, Rose McGowan, Keanu Reeves, record executives, Scott Ian, Billy Corgan, hookers, Flea, Billy Zane, drug dealers, Angelyne, Leonardo DiCaprio, the cleaning lady, Leif Garrett, Natalie Imbruglia, and everyone else who came into the house. Some are zany, some inebriated, naked, hamming it up, looking beautiful, or looking ugly the photo booth tells no lies.

Accompanying the strips are hilarious stories, musings, tellall anecdotes, and other glimpses into the lifestyle of one of the most decadent rockstars of our time.

This chronicle of a year in Navarro’s life is also a gritty portrait of his descent into drug use and selfdestructiveness, and his struggle to find meaning.

Designed by the mad genius who also produced Manson’s, Mtley Cre’s, and Mankind’s books, Don’t Try This at Home is a visual masterpiece, a celebrity expos, and a shocking, hilarious, and irresistible read.

Andy Warhol was so enamored with Polaroids that he made special arrangements with the company to purchase all the overstock film of a discontinued model of camera. A similar photographic fetish is the organizing principle of Don’t Try This at Home. For kicks, rocker and author Dave Navarro installed a carnival-grade photo booth in his L.A. home. The book documents a year’s worth of visitors to Navarro’s pad who all stepped into the booth to get their mug shots snapped.

The resulting dispatch from Hell is as hard to draw one’s eyes from as a twelve car pile-up. Intermingled with a parade of rock stars, models, prostitutes, drug dealers, pizza delivery guys, and housecleaners are a series of observations and interviews with Dave and his co-author Neil Strauss. Strauss, co-author of other tomes for Jenna Jameson, Marilyn Manson, and Motley Crue, operates less as an editor than as a ringmaster to this debauched thing rock stars call a lifestyle.

Don’t Try This At Home is one rollicking contact high of a memoir. Just set it on the coffee table at your home and watch how quickly it snares its readers. -Ryan Boudinot
